  • UNICEF Silver Award

    Tue 20 Jun 2023

The GFC School are very proud to have received the UNICEF Silver Rights Respecting School Award.

The award recognises a school's achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond.

After achieving ‘Bronze: Rights Committed’ in June 2021, the school have continued to demonstrate that they are dedicated to learning about, and fighting for, children’s rights in the school and wider community.

This valuable work at The GFC School has been done through academic lessons, thought-provoking assemblies and well-planned events, and it is lived in the day-to-day life of the school.

During a virtual visit with UNICEF, the GFC’s UNICEF student committee showed excellent knowledge of their rights as they discussed all the positive work they have done, which includes volunteering in the local community, running anti-bullying campaigns, observing and celebrating various key awareness dates and attending local debates to discuss important local issues.

“We have embedded the UN Convention on the Rights on the Child into our policy, practice and culture,” said Director of Education Sue Wade.

“Learning about these rights has had an incredibly positive impact on our school. We are delighted to have been awarded the Silver Award but the hard work certainly does not stop here.

“I am unbelievably proud of all of the staff and the students who attend The GFC School.  We are all very excited about now going for the Gold Award.”

A huge congratulations to everyone at the school; keep up the fantastic work!

  • Gills Gaffer Gets behind Challenge

Thu 16 Mar 2023 David Spendley

Gillingham manager Neil Harris met with GFC students prior to their HUGE Red Nose Day challenge on Friday for a motivational chat and he even clocked up some impressive miles on his bike to add to the school’s total.

Staff and students will not only ‘scale’ the highest points of England, Scotland and Wales on March 17th but they will also cycle the distance between them.

The school will use the stairs of the Rainham End stand to walk up throughout the day to match the amount of steps it would take to ascend Snowdon (1085m), Ben Nevis (1344m) and Scafell Pike (978m). They will also get on their exercise bikes to replicate the 462 gruelling miles needed to travel to each point.

“What these students are doing is amazing,” said Harris. “It was great to meet them today; you can sense that they are definitely up to the challenge!”

Red Nose Day is an annual fundraising campaign to end the cycle of child poverty and ensure a healthy future for all children. Through the power of entertainment, laughter and fun, the charity raises money and awareness to ensure all children are safe, healthy, educated, and empowered in the U.K. and abroad.

  • World Book Day

    Thu 02 Mar 2023

An odd assortment of literary characters have turned up at The GFC School: Mary Poppins is giving English lessons, Where’s Wally is teaching geography and there’s even an Oompa Loompa in the maths room!

It is, of course, World Book Day and staff and students have dressed as their favourite book characters.

The event, which is celebrated by over 100 countries around the world, is proving a big success at The GFC School and everyone is eager to show off their costume choice and discuss their books.

Students have also got their imaginations working and have produced some fantastic pieces of creative writing and poetry which they shared with classmates.

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

GFC Director of Education Sue Wade said: “World Book Day has generated a lot of excitement and students have enjoyed talking about their favourite stories and characters. Today is all about encouraging children to foster a love for reading and we have certainly done that at The GFC School.”

Well done to everyone involved and happy reading!
