English

We want to immerse our students in the world of literature developing a love of the written word. We explore literature from different cultures and across time whilst developing their ability to create their own texts.

Our students learn how to structure their arguments by reading key non-fiction texts from history. We also debate key ideas allowing students to voice their opinions whilst learning how to listen, respect and respond to the ideas of others.

We teach key stage 3 English through cross-curricular topics allowing us to explore language through different medias.  In key stage 4, students study English Language at GCSE following the curriculum for the Cambridge iGCSE. During the two years they read and study a range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, from across the globe and from the 19th, 20th and 21st century, learning how to become more critical readers in preparation for the English language exam.

Students develop literacy through our whole school approach to teaching language and writing. We acknowledge the power of reading through World Book Day and books shared in form time from the school library.
